Answers to common questions related to Qurbani / Udhiyyah.

Ask a question about Qurbani

Qurbani / Udhiyyah is one of the five animals (sheep, goat, cattle, camel and buffalo) which are offered as sacrifice on the 10th, 11th, 12th days of Dhul-Hijjah in order to fulfil a Wajib (incumbent) act of ibâdah (worship) and closeness to Allâh (Ta'ala).

Performing Qurbani is a form of gratitude shown towards Allahu SWT for all the offerings and blessings. It is a form of a gracious worship that brings you closer to Allahu SWT. It is recommended to perform Qurbani to attain any desires. It is recommended in the Islamic following according to customs and religious values to perform this act. You may perform a Shukur Qurbani to show gratitude for something materialistic, a Sheefa Qurbani for someone who is ill, a Shukur Qurbani for a newborn child, an Aqiqah Qurbani to practice the Sunnah of the Prophet SAV, or a Nafilah Qurbani for many other things.

After the sacrifice of prophet Ibrahim, it is obliged to every Muslim (if he can afford) to perform animal sacrifice during the days of Eid-ul-Adha in commemoration of that one.

Though it is wajib (an obligatory act) still it is highly recommended to perform the sacrifice if you can afford it. Many scholars also refer to it as a Sunnah as it was performed by our Holy Prophet (PBUH) also. However, in all ways, it results in immense rewards.

Every Adult Muslim (the one who has reached the age of puberty) and owns enough belongings to pay Zakat is eligible also to perform Qurbani/Udhiyah on one of the days of Eid-ul-Adha.

We have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. Our tax ID number is 11-2567323. It is best to consult with your tax adviser to learn how you may be able to use your donation as a tax-deduction

Yes, it is compulsory to perform the only animal sacrifice on Eid-ul-Adha, in commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice merely for the sake of Allahu SWT.

The sheep, goat, cow, or camel can be sacrificed as an obligatory sacrifice. 1 goat is equivalent to 1 Qurbani, and similarly, 1 cow would be equal to (1*7) Qurbani.

The people who deserve and are poverty-stricken enough that they can not even afford meat for themselves, are eligible for this Qurbani meat.

Yes, because Islam is a religion of affection, it does not prohibit us from offering Qurbani meat to non-Muslims. But if particular non-Muslims community is involved in killing and fighting Muslims, then it does not allow us in this regard.

The Qurbani distribution rule states that slaughtered animals should be divided into 3 parts equally, then the meat should be distributed among the donor, relatives & deserving people during Eid days.

It is permissible in Islam to preserve Qurbani meat for more than the 3 days (the Eid days), as a hadith narrates: “Eat, feed others, and store [of your Udhiyahs].” (Muslim) But it should not be stored for a longer period.

According to few religious scholars, Islam permits to perform the voluntary sacrifice on behalf of the deceased.

Charitable sacrifice refers to donations given voluntarily, while obligated sacrifice is obligatory worship, which is obliged on Muslims, to be performed especially during Eid-ul-Adha days, under specific conditions.

No, there is no limit defined for charitable sacrifice, as that is solely a voluntary act with the intent to get rewarded by Allah almighty.

About Tashriq Takbeer

Tashriq Takbir is the Takbir recited on the Days of Tashriq. It is Wajib for every liable Muslim. Surah Al-Baqarah Ayah 203, which says: “Celebrate the praises of Allah during the Appointed Days.”, indicates the Tashriq Takbeer.

Mustahaabs Of Qurbani

Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: “The son of Adam does not perform any action on the day of Nahr (Eid Al-Adha) which is more beloved to Allah than causing the blood (of the Udhiyyah) to flow”

Some Rules Concerning Qurbani

If a person does not fulfil their Qurbani obligation in time, then giving its value as donation in money will not be a substitute. If rich people do not fulfil their Qurbani obligation and the time of sacrifice passes, then they will need to give the value of the Qurbani in money as donation.

Merits Of Udhiyyah (Qurbani)

Our Prophet (Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: “The Day of Nahr (10th of Dhul-Hijjah) is one of the greatest days with Allah.” Whoever approaches his sacrificial animal on the day of Nahr to slaughter it, Allah’s mercy will also approach (bless) him in Jannah.

Some Benefits Of Qurbani

With Qurbani there is a feast for servants of Allah (s.w.t). There is a devotion in the cause of Allah (s.w.t) in performing Qurbani. It is a way of showing gratitude to the many blessings Allah (s.w.t) has given us, to get closer to Allah, gain rewards and it also acts as a barrier against troubles.

Five animals (sheep, goat, cattle, water buffalo, camel) that are sacrificed to gain the blessing of and to become closer to Allah (s.w.t) on the days of Eid-ul Adha are called Qurbani. THE NISÂB AND WUJUB OF UDHIYYAH (QURBANI)

The Nisâb of Udhiyyah is to be in possession of an amount of wealth which renders Sadaqah Al-Fitrah to be Wâjib. It is Wâjib upon every male and female Muslims who are free and Muqim (resident) to offer sacrifice if they possess this amount of Nisab.

Unlike in the case of Zakah, it is not necessary that this amount be in one’s possession for a complete lunar year and it has the potential to grow.

Basic and Essential Necessities: A house, sufficient amount of its furniture, a car, three types of clothing, -like work outfits, casual clothes and occasion wear- and an income for the person himself and his dependents, which is sufficient to sustain their livelihood for a complete lunar year. One who is in possession of 80.14gr of gold or its equivalent in money, or any other form of wealth which is surplus to the previously mentioned necessities, is obliged to practice Udhiyya once a year.

If a person possesses such an amount of wealth towards the end of the prescribed time for sacrifice (12th of Dhul-Hijjah for Hanafis and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah for Shafiis), offering Udhiyyah will immediately be Wâjib (incumbent) on him.

Free and Muqîm (resident) Muslims, who are in possession of the Nisâb amount of wealth, are recommended to offer sacrifice on behalf of their young children. This is Mustahab (recommended). The rule is mentioned like that in Zâhir Al-Riwâyah and the fatwâ (ruling) is passed accordingly.  However, according to the narration of Imâm Hasan (rahmatullâhi alayhi), which he reports from Imâm Abu Hanifah (r.a.); it is Wâjib (incumbent) to offer Udhiyyah for his young children and grandchildren who have no parents. Imâm Quduri (r.a.) preferred the narration of Imâm Hasan (r.a.) in this regard.

According to Imâm Azam (r.a.) and Abû Yûsuf (r.a.), sanity and bulûgh (age of puberty) are not among the conditions of being liable for the sacrifice. Parents or guardians of the insane and the children under the age of bulûgh can do the Udhiyyah from their possessions, on their behalf, and feed them with the meat. The remainder of the meat can be exchanged for some necessities which can be used, such as clothing. However, sanity and bulûgh (age of puberty) are among the conditions of being liable for the sacrifice according to Imam Muhammad.

Nafilah Qurbani Requirements

Any Qurbani that is performed as a Vaceeb can be performed as a Nafilah as well. Nafilah Qurbani’s are performed according to the means and needs of the performer. It is not a necessity for one to perform Nafilah Qurbani. It is believed and hoped that by performing the Nafilah Qurbani, the owner will be virtous and closer to Allahu SWT. However, there is no responsibility for those who do not perform Nafilah Qurbani.
